What is hyperpigmentation?
Hyper (more) & pigment (color): Hyperpigmentation is caused by an excess production of melanin—the pigment that gives our skin its color—produced by cells called melanocytes. There are two types of melanin produced in the epidermal layer: pheomelanin, which leads to lighter skin tones, and eumelanin, which is responsible for darker skin tones.
